In pursuit of its mission to enhance intellectual engagement between academic research and practice concerning US-Africa relations, the University of Nairobi, in partnership with the African Centre for the Study of the United States of America (ACSUS) within the Department of Diplomacy and International Studies, and the US Embassy in Nairobi, hosted US Major General Jami C. Shawley on Wednesday, 14th February 2024. The event aimed to critically assess the evolving dynamics of US-Kenya security relations.

The discussion provided a comprehensive opportunity for the exploration of strategic dynamics shaping US-Kenya security cooperation. Distinguished attendees included:

  • Ludeki Chweya – Director General, Kenya School of Government (KSG)
  • Major General Fatma Ahmed – Kenya Defence Forces (KDF)
  • Senior officials from the US Embassy in Nairobi

 

The session delved into the impact of security collaborations on regional stability, the significance of military partnerships, and the broader implications of the US-Kenya alliance in addressing global security challenges. Other discussed topics in the forum touched on what the future holds for the strategic security partnership between the two states, the evolving landscape of gender equality and emerging role of cybersecurity in maintaining international peace and stability.

Conclusion and Future Collaborations
The Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa whose mission is to maintain regional security and stability, protect the larger USA and coalition interest strongly relies on its partners who share similar principles of peace, security, and stability. Kenya, a crucial security partner to this coalition plays an important role as an exporter of peace and stability as it has its defence forces taking major parts in maintaining both regional and international peace and Security. Kenya stands to benefit millions of dollars in aid through this bilateral strategic partnership program, also it benefits in other areas such as economic sector through the establishment of bilateral trade ties and bench marking on best case practices.

The event underscored the importance of strategic dialogue in strengthening diplomatic and academic relations between Kenya and the United States. The University of Nairobi remains dedicated to hosting such forums that enhance mutual understanding and cooperation on critical global issues.
