The Africa Center for the Study of the United States (ACSUS) was established by the Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies (IDIS) at the University of Nairobi on November 11th, 2022. ACSUS is dedicated to advancing intellectual and cultural exchanges that enrich the understanding of Africa-U.S. relations. We focus on promoting African-generated knowledge and fostering critical engagement with U.S. society, history, and policies. As a dynamic resource for scholars, policymakers, researchers, and students, ACSUS champions evidence-based decision-making and open dialogue, creating bridges between academia, government, civil society, and the business community to shape the future of Africa-U.S. engagement.
Generate African Perspectives on U.S. Affairs
We create and promote African-driven knowledge about the U.S., offering nuanced insights into its society, politics, and history to inform African policies, strategies, and actions.
Foster Scholarly Collaboration and Exchange
We connect African and U.S. scholars, researchers, and students, encouraging academic partnerships, cultural exchanges, and the mutual exploration of Africa-U.S. relations.
Support Research and Evidence-Based Policymaking
We conduct and commission research that provides valuable data and insights to inform policymaking processes in both Africa and the U.S., addressing key issues in their interactions.
Host Dialogues and Convenings
We convene dialogues between key stakeholders, including governments, businesses, civil society, and regional organizations, to foster deeper cooperation and understanding in Africa-U.S. relations.
Prepare and Support Africa-U.S. Engagements
We provide training and orientation programs for Africans engaging with the U.S. and offer returning professionals a platform to share their experiences, enhancing Africa’s understanding of U.S. dynamics.
